What's in a name

“Dor de Casă™” is most simply translated as “longing for home,” yet the English words barely graze the depth of what the phrase carries in Romanian. It belongs to that rare category of expressions that hold within them an entire emotional landscape: intimate, ancestral, impossible to render fully in another tongue. Perhaps only the word "dor" itself bears a greater weight in the Romanian soul.

Etymologically, dor descends from the Latin dolere: to ache, to grieve. Yet in Romanian, it evolved into something far more tender and elusive: a sorrow illuminated by love, a sweetness threaded through presence of absence. It is the feeling of carrying someone or someplace within you precisely because it is no longer near. A quiet ache that is both wound and warmth. In English, one misses; it is an action, fleeting and external. In Romanian, one has dor. It lives inside the body like memory itself, deeply personal, inseparable from one’s emotional being.

Wine, too, is a vessel of memory. Within a single bottle rests the breath of the soil, the temperament of the seasons, the labor of hands, the patience of craft, and the dreams of the winemaker who shaped it. It is geography transformed into emotion.

For us, “Dor de Casă™” is the story we bring with every bottle. A fragment of home carried across oceans for those who have left it behind, and an invitation into that home for those who have never known it.
